Altgeld, John Peter
(1847-1902) Алтгельд, Джон Питер
Политический деятель, уроженец Германии [German-Americans] (вырос в Огайо). Во время Гражданской войны [Civil War] воевал в рядах Армии Союза [Union Army]. Затем работал учителем, адвокатом. Его первым политическим постом было место прокурора одного из округов [county attorney] в Миссури, на которое он был избран от Демократической партии [Democratic Party]. Переехав в Чикаго, он счел адвокатскую практику невыгодным занятием и занялся строительным бизнесом. В 1886 его избрали окружным судьей [county judge], а затем - на пост губернатора штата Иллинойс, который он занимал в 1892-96. Занимал активные правозащитные позиции, проводил реформу пенитенциарной системы штата. В 1893 помиловал анархистов, осужденных за организацию Хеймаркетского бунта [Haymarket Riot]. В 1894 Алтгельд выступил против отправки федеральных войск в Чикаго во время Пульмановской забастовки [Pullman Strike], так как считал, что местные власти могут сами справиться с ситуацией. Полагая, что президент Г. Кливленд [Cleveland, (Stephen) Grover] представляет корпоративные интересы, возглавил в Демократической партии силы, выступавшие за неограниченную чеканку серебра [free silver], на партийном съезде 1896 отстранил Кливленда от контроля за партией, написал предвыборную программу, изменявшую суть партии. Сам проиграл на выборах на пост губернатора, лишился средств и вернулся к юридической практике.
